Shikakai & Reetha: Gentle, Traditional Shampoo Alternatives
Shikakai and reetha cleanse without harsh detergents. Learn how they work and when to use them as part of a gentle hair-wash routine.

How They Cleanse
Shikakai and reetha are plant-based cleansers used across the subcontinent long before synthetic surfactants became common. Shikakai contains saponins that foam lightly and help lift dirt; reetha (soap nut) is a natural source of surfactant that rinses cleanly. Together they provide a gentle wash that is especially suitable for people seeking low-foam, low-chemical alternatives.
How to prepare: powder both ingredients finely. Mix a tablespoon or two in warm water to create a diluted liquid for wetting hair, or add water to a bowl of powder to make a paste for a scalp-focused treatment. When used as a primary wash, expect a softer, lower-foam feel — follow with a light conditioning rinse if needed.
Benefits and caveats: these botanicals are kinder to colour-treated and fragile hair in many cases because they do not strip lipids as aggressively as some foaming detergents. However, they require slightly different technique — longer soak, gentle massage and thorough rinse — and they are not an instant swap if you are used to high-foaming shampoos.
Storage and sourcing: choose fresh, finely milled powders and store in airtight containers away from moisture. If you prefer convenience, look for pre-made low-foam blends that list only shikakai, reetha and a stabilising carrier.
